Last call is kind of like Blogkakke only on LSD, PCP and ludes. Fucking ludes man. Instead of just posting random links, it’s a place to gather with like-minded sports fans, alcoholics and amateur comedians. So stop by, tell us a joke, rant about that local sports team or just spout off about that time you did that thing. You know, that thing.
I know y’all have been distraught about our apparent lack of posting, but fear not for it’s all about to change. I’m back in the real world and have real Internet again, so it should be full steam ahead from here on.
Musical Interlude:
Linkage:
Deadspin: Boy is Peyton sure going to be pissed. After last year Brady got his own rule, and after this year Curtis Painter might get his own rule too. Maybe the Manning rule will be no other player shall win the MVP award while he’s around…
With Leather: If you’ve been under a rock lately, you might not have heard about Mike Leach and/or Adam James. Well fret not children because Adam James accomplished something.
Second String Fullback: According to the Oakland Tribune, the Raiders are soon going to fire Head Coach, Tom Cable. Now sure he broke his assistants face, and is a woman beater, but if you were stuck in Oakland you probably would too. Oh yeah, Rovitz doesn’t think he should be fired.
Style Points: Style Points makes its triumphant return? Maybe not, but they do have a new post up. The MNF crew shills Avatar.
The Rookies: WTF? Hath hell frozen over? Not only did SP update, but The Rookies too (yeah it was yesterday, that’s just semantics).
SB Nation: ESPN, Mike Leach and the two types of people who take paychecks, employees and whores. A great piece by Spencer Hall.
The Quad: The story and back story of tonights Fiesta Bowl, which matches up #3 TCU and #6 Boise State.
Shutdown Corner: MJD thinks that the Patriots will be completely fine without Wes Welker. It makes sense.
Dan Shanoff: Shanoff presents an interesting opinion. Tonights Fiesta Bowl is the de facto semi-final for next years NCAA BCS Championship game. This too also makes sense.

Maybe I shouldn’t have used such big pictures. That’s a pretty long post.
Don’t sweat it. The people recovering from a week-long bender will appreciate the lack of eye strain.
Haha, I hope that’s not too hairy a picture this week.
Needs more Kimberly pictures. Preferably from the front. Sans pants.
Well they exist, and I’m sure you can find them pretty easy. And if you go and vote for her as PMOY, there could be a bunch more.
/just sayin
If it’s any consolation I’m not wearing pants.
I don’t know if that consoles anyone.
Uh … yeah, definitely didn’t console me … Hm?
Query: why don’t they make mouse-flavored cat food?
I think because then they’d have to create the mouse farming industry
there already is one. they’d just need to expand it.
That’s different but yeah okay. Cats don’t just eat mice either though. There should be frog, robin and other assorted flavours as well.
That’s true.
I merely object to the gratuitous use of seafood that a cat could NEVER catch. Salmon? Yellow Fin Tuna? WTF? Try tadpole, lizard or goldfish.
Yeah no kidding, but I think the problem lies in the details. The tuna for cat food is likely the hot dog parts, bones, skin, assholes etc. I think if they had those extra mouse parts they might make mousey cat food.
And yeah, by the mouse farming industry, I was referring to live mice for pet snakes, and the lab mouse industries.
My dog could make a good living running that cottage industry. When she was a puppy, she caught one without the Receiveress noticing it while taking a shit. When the hound and the Receiveress got into the house, she noticed that something in the hound’s mouth, and swabbed out a mouse. Screaming (and hilarity) ensued.
At my place a cat brought in what I thought was the biggest mouse ever. It was right out of Loony Tunes, when Sylvester tried to fight and eat the Kangaroo. But I digress, it was only a bunny not kangaroo.
Movie Science Montage female scientist needs bigger boobs with a dress suit and heals. (her, not the boobs – that’d just be weird).
for Movie montage, yes. For CSI/tv montage, heels are right out – the lab chicks are geeky and cute, but not hot.
Yeah but they all rock super tight and low cut clothing. And there are a couple that surpass cute.
okay, I’ll give you that, particularly if you’re just looking at them (which is to say, the characters are horrid, but if the actress were allowed to remain mute, my opinion would escalate considerably)
JJ from Criminal Minds is pretty alright in all regards.
So, drinking this Pepsi throwback and wondering… Why did they stop using real sugar again? This Pepsi actually doesn’t suck.
I may have to try this. I’m not sure if I remember Pepsi with real sugar.
Point of notice, are you a Pepsi or Coke drinker normally?
I don’t have a preference, really. As long as I have the caffeine.
I tried some Mountain Dew throwback last year and it was WAY too sweet for me. I guess I’ve secretly been brainwashed into liking high fructose corn syrup.
Pure Greed/Economics.
Because there were tariffs imposed on imported sugar (to protect the US Sugar growers), the price of sucrose (sugar) therefore increased substantially. Combine that with the subsidies given to corn growers, (thereby flooding the market with corn that needs to be processed, namely into snack foods, binders, fillers, and yes, corn syrup and HFCS), and you get cheap, cheap CHEAP sweeteners to throw at an ever growing market (double meaning definitely intended).
School’s out!
And that’s also why the big wigs are getting up in arms about ethanol. If they have to make gas from the corn, then heaven forbid… Their oil buddies will go nuts.
Not really. Don’t forget that the end game is a complete loss – for every gallon of ethanol made, you need 1.1 gallons of petrol to MAKE that ethanol. Consider the vast amounts of fertilizer (petroleum derived (PD)), tractor fuel (PD), refining process chemicals (PD), processing plant fuel (PD), distribution of both the processors and the end product(PD), and Big Oil won’t be hurt in the least. Not to mention all the extra pollution put into the air and water in growing all that damn corn, plus the loss of crop land to growing more corn (supplanting actual FOOD crops, because fuel corn is not food corn).
I thought PD meant Penile Dysfunction.
Don’t take this personally folks, but I’m not sure what to do without a Monday Night Football Blogkakke.
I hover between interested and blah on the TCU-BSU bowl game, too.
Oh snap, I was going to do school work tonight. Looks like I’ll be turning on the tele.
Just remember the times from summer when this was the crazy happening thing/place. Oh, and I could throw up a live blog if that was of interest, it doesn’t take too much time.
I enjoy the usualness here (and that’s not an insult, so don’t take it as one).
I’m playing a bit in Orson’s blog. We’ll see. It’s just not the same, if only because I have no rooting interest in either team.
So winner of the Fiesta Bowl gets the winner of Texas-Alabama, right? No? Wait, what?
Go read Dan Shanoff today. He makes a great point about why this is a relevant game… for 2010.
Yeah, I completely agree with that article today. Made perfect sense and didn’t contain Tebow, so double yay!
I liked the premise, but I don’t agree with it. No way a non BCS team gets to the National Championship ahead of 2 undefeated BCS* teams or 1 undefeated and a 1 loss SEC.
*Does not include Big East
Maybe…
/optimism
How convenient! It IS 2010! Oh, wait…
Hey, rasslin fans. Jeff Hardy just appeared on iMPACT. So much for WWE’s attempt to re-sign him.
And now, Ric Flair has appeared… It’s time to see how much money TNA has decided to spend for “legends.”
So… at the risk of annoying Sculptor!?!, what are your top movies/tv shows of the past 10 years (or so)?
Mine (in no order)
Best Movies – I’d say:
The Lives of Others
Dogville
There Will Be Blood (although from what I’ve heard of No Country, I should watch it a 3rd time and see if my opinion changes)
Gone Baby Gone (maybe because Omar was in it)
Funnest
Bourne Identity
Supertroopers
TV Shows
Best
The Wire
Funnest
South Park
(haven’t yet made the list)
Chapelle Show (haven’t watched it all, so can’t really decide)
The guilty pleasure: Alias, although I still need to watch Buffy and that could actually make the funnest list
I’m not very good at making lists. I’m more curious on tips of what to watch than your actual results.
I just thought of this since I was catching up on my Slate.com culture gabfest podcasts.
I concur with There will be Blood and The Wire. The Wire is on its own god damn list.
Why would it annoy me? I just don’t watch many movies, so generally have no clue what people are referring to.
The whole decade list thing. I was careful not to mention that.
Oh, that. No, I’m fixated on catfood and corn syrup now.
;)
Oh, and I watched the 3rd of the Thin Man movies – don’t know if I mentioned that before. Good stuff – thanks for pointing that out on NYE.
No problem. I love Myrna Loy, and their repartee in that series is hilarious.
Fun Fact: Asta is a common crossword puzzle answer (Nick and Nora’s dog; The Charles’ dog). I have no idea why, though. (
God I’m retarded sometimes. I’ll be back in 20 with beer. Should have stocked up beforehand. As a side note, I love when the weather forecast gets changed. It was supposed to be -33F today and yet, its only -4.
It’s all about going unabated to the QB then pushing him to the field turf anyway.
Any TV list that does not include West Wing, 24 or Angel is invalidated.
IMHO.
Angel was a very underrated show. 24 was brilliant season 1, but varied afterwards and other than Keifer wasn’t always good acting. Never got into West Wing as I’m Canadian and didn’t care about the inner workings of the White House, remember I may have been in Jr. High when it started.
Had friends who liked West Wing but never got into it myself since I didn’t watch TV for those years. 24 would make the list if it only had been 6 hours/season, but 24 is too long (I’ve only seen seasons 1 and 2).
I’ll watch Angel after I’ve watched Buffy… but it could make a list.
On Slate, 24 and West Wing were mentioned, but I was insulted Buffy wasn’t. Buffy would be on my list if I had watched the full show. I actually don’t watch much TV, just what is recommended to me by others who share similar interests.
Also, I haven’t watched many of the new Dr. Who’s… but that isn’t because I don’t think I wouldn’t enjoy them, just never got around to it. I think I’ve seen most of the 1st (new) season.
Buffy was one of those shows that critics liked, but it never seemed to do good awards time due to its supernaturalness
For me, Buffy was hit/miss. I very much dislike the first season, sans the pilot and finale. The 2nd season is fantastic, and 3rd season even better. 4th season is mediocre, but has (arguably) the 2 BEST episodes in the entire run. I really like the last 3 seasons, but concede I might be in the minority.
no, I concur. It was a great, very underrated show, though it could stumble from time to time.
Holy fuck, this game is an abortion early on.
And not the good kind. Like, wire coat hanger abortion.
is there another kind?

Wow, that kid is fast… compared to the slow ass players around him.

haha, pedantic much?
He’s a Wisconsin fan. No one is better qualified to judge “slow.”
Much like a slow Packers team, a slow Wisconsin team, and a former Packers QB who has a slow brain.
Majkowski or Voldemort?
Yes
Chris Myers, the term you’re looking for is NOT “octaves”, it’s “decibels”. Idiot.
Word. I cringed when I heard that. Increased octaves, however, would have made me do that as well.
Also, any best of the decade movie list that doesn’t have Almost Famous is invalidated as well. Fucking underrated movie.
Perhaps I shouldn’t make lists. I have heard good things about it, but haven’t seen it.
Will add it to the list of to watch (as well as giving West Wing a chance).
I would almost Guarantee that the first four seasons of West Wing will give you a three day orgasm. That said, i’m not sure how it’d play in Canadiastan.
Almost Famous is terribly underrated and is a must view if you like any of the following
Movies
Good Movies
Music
Jason Lee
The other guy who’s not Jason Lee
Will watch West Wing (after I finish Deadwood and watch the John Adams miniseries). Should I watch Buffy and Angel first or go straight to West Wing?
I’ve already seen the first 3 seasons of Buffy and parts of the last two of both. I’d probably start with season 2 of Buffy and re-watch that (if that is the series you recommend to watch first). THen watch Angel. (Angel finale was much better than Buffy finale.)
If you’re part way through Buffy, just continue on through it. Wouldn’t that be the simplest?
At least my lists of the past 10 years are better than what I assume Simmons would have written: Karate Kid, Ronin, reality TV shows, more 80s movies, Larry Bird.
also, Veronica Mars & Wonderfalls. As a Canadianastani I’m assuming you’re familiar with Caroline Dhavernas (may have butchered the last name)
Nope, haven’t heard of her. Duly google image searched. Heavens to Betsy, Wonderfalls has a really high rating on IMDB.
Wonderfalls is as fantastic as any show with only 8 episodes on TV could have been.
And Caroline is cute-hot.
It kind of seems wrong for a Flaming Lips song to be the soundtrack for a Banking commercial.
Hey, I remember when they were on 90210, so they have a history.
What, really?
Poiny-see-etta bowl? That’s a new way to say that word.
Fuck Whichever fuckhead said that.
Wow, you are ANGRY.
Little bit. I can just see that tomorrow I’m going to be subjected to “Team such and such should have had a chance to play against one of the Orange Bowl teams” even though they’ve barely shown they shouldn’t be playing in some other lame ass bowl.
Maybe a just a bit more than little bit angry. Blame LC.
Poor thing. Blow week will be over soon, and then we can get back to bitching about real contests -(looks around, sees none, shrugs) – drinking!
Wow, that shoulda been a penalty
Anyone know where FD is? I think he might be jizzing at the opportunity of a nWo reunion on TNA iMPACT. And Goddess keeps wondering why I’m going “Fuck, fuck fuck!” over Skype.
Vince owns that trademark, so I wouldn’t bet on them even beginning to try to use that name.
And Linda Bollea owns Hulk’s ass, but he’s still allowed to use it.
But only 11″ of those pythons, brotha!
Only 11″? Couldn’t get the rest in the divorce, eh?
Everything’s 50/50.
I think Dick Clark could win an organized debate against the combined talents of Hogan, Nash, and Hall at this point.
And Michael J. Fox has more coordination than Hall.
That TCU cheerleader could be the future ex Mrs Gally
Where all the white women at? This game, apparently.
haha +1
Can I throw Layer Cake in for funnest movies of the last decade?
I just started watching The Wire a week ago. As an educated white person, of course I love it. The question is, what will a guy with no Netflix do when I finish the first 2 seasons my friend loaned me?
And I’ll add in RockaRolla as a funny movie.
What’s your connection to the internets like? I watched them as torrents and then enjoyed it so much I bought the DVDs
Unfortunately, it’s pretty slow. I may be forced to get Netflix just to finish it up. Either that or put out a personal ad for a hot woman that owns seasons 3-5.
If you find one, ask if she’s got a sister
Good luck. I know pretty ladies who have watched Battlestar, but not The Wire. I may need to met more ladies. I also may need to meet more ladies who watch the Wire.
@ Gally – It has been about 4 years since I’ve watch an episode of Buffy. I’m not kidding when I say I pretty much only watch sports.
(although I have seen all of Pushing Daisies, all of Battlestar, and some of Better off Ted which can go under shows that ran during the past year).
fair enough.
Crap, I forgot Pushing Daisies.
24
West Wing
Buffy
Angel
Wonderfalls
Veronica Mars
Lost
Arrested Development
How do you FORGET Pushing Daisies? That was arguably one of the best shows of the last 1/4 century. Clever never wins, apparently .
I’m staring right at the Season 1 boxset, too. What can I say, I be dumb sometimes.
So you’re saying that I should watch it then? I’ve never seen a minute of it.
It’s good. I liked the costumes.
/no homo.
Anna Friel and Kristen Chenoweth are both pretty hot.
I also liked the snappy dialogue. Mostly the snappy dialogue. I had it on the list, then deleted it. I should have gone with my instinct.
Other advantage is that there are only about 20 episodes, so it’s not a big commitment.
Yes. I appreciated it because it was clever, and the dialogue was great. Not to mention the visuals were hyper-real. It was just FUN.
Exactly. And Anna Friel is smoking hot, and Kristin Chenowith has a magnificent rack.
Not only does she have a magnificent rack, but she can sing too. Sculptor!?!’s right. It was just FUN.
Wow. Sophie’s Choise of TV. I’d say West Wing. You’ll know if you’re into it after the first 4 hours, probably, though I’d suggest episodes 5&6 regardless. If you dig it, seasons 1-4 will fly by, and you might want to watch 5-6-7. 5 is less good, but has at least 3 great episodes, 6 is hit and miss, but 7 is well worth the time.
Buffy-Angel, there are some episodes in season 5 of Buffy and Season 2 of Angel that go hand in hand, so it might be worth watching simultaneously.
One thing I think, I think I like the House pop culture references. The Omar Epps/Mike Tomlin thing, and the upcoming Jack Bauer thing and what not.
Inglorious Basterds and The League do it for me
I don’t know that The League would make a best of the decade list though.
So Inglorious Bastards was good? I’ve been waiting for it to come out on TMN (our movie network).
@ Rob in WI – My brother told me to watch Lost. I made it through 2.5 seasons and then (somehow) I missed PVR’ing some episodes. I didn’t really like it, but he insisted that it became good in the 3rd season (the last episode I watched was promising, but I was so pissed off that I’d PVR’ed an episode a day off of Space to catch up and then missed a week I have refused to try and follow up and make all those crappy episodes worth it (although I really should).
Yeah the Basterds is pretty good
Well, if you didn’t like the first 2.5 seasons of Lost, we can’t be friends anymore.
That said, if you don’t think you’re missing anything, then you’re not. I missed the entire 5th season, and am just now catching up on DVD.
Well it was alright, but Charlie was as annoying as hell, and there were good parts, but it felt like it was being stretched out too much.
It’s almost unfair how 12 hour shows can be so much better since the story is so much tighter.
Well, yeah, they don’t have an additional 12 hours or so to fill. It’s pretty important then to make the 12 hours you have as relevant as possible.
IMHO, though, 22-24 episodes of Very Good -> Great television will always be better than 12-13 hours of Great television. I guarentee I can find 13 hours of the first season of West Wing as good or better than the entire first season of Deadwood.
Better yet, Homicide > The Wire, because Simon et al plotted out a great story over 22 episodes for 4 years (plus 8 early episodes) compared to 5/13 for the Wire.
I liked the first season. Second season was solid, then I missed a bit and next thing you know they’re traveling through time and I scribbled game over in my little notebook.
And Val Venis is on TNA… Who wants to put up the white flag for them?
This football game is like watching the mentally challenged have intercourse.
//yes I cleaned that up.
why? because it’s not 35-28 at the half?
Because it’s been sloppy, clumsy, awkward, Team Orange doesn’t quite know where all the parts go. The end result will be achieved (in this case, a “winner”), but the real losers will be the people (like me) who suffered through it.
A 35-28 game might not be entertaining, and a 10-0 game where both teams play really well could be. This is not the latter.
And that PI call just adds to it.
Lest we forget that Boise beat up on Oregon (on home field) a lot more than tOSU beat up on Oregon (on a neutral field, so it’s probably a wash) & that TCU beat some BCS teams (although does an ACC team count?) & BYU, so their pedigree (this season) isn’t that horrible.
I’ll admit it’s been a tad sloppy, but it’s more of the D’s shutting the other team down. This is new territory for TCU, and add in the fact that neither team has played a game in a month and they’re bound to be rusty, also why the Colts are going to lose their next game.
This has NOT been about the defenses. This has been about bad offenses (the QBs in particular).
Christ, the Team Orange QB has 10 overthrows already*
*may not be 10, but it’s a LOT.
huh. now you’ve got me trying to figure out what your original line was: crude and to the point? or more sarcastic and biting?
Probably would have just been “Two retards fucking”, but I’m trying to be more sensitive to certain words. And numbers.
Agreed. Numbers deserve our respect.
Yep. Especially even numbers. Non even numbers are just….. *sunglasses*…. Odd. YEAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!
@ Rob in WI
Nah man, I’m going with Aristotle on this one. I just grabbed my copy of Poetics from by my desk ‘The longer the story, consistently with its being comprehensible as a whole, the finer it is by reason of its magnitude. As a rough general formula, “a length which allows of the hero passing by a series of probable or necessary stages from misfortune to happiness, or from happiness to misfortune”, may suffice as a limit for the magnitude of the story.’
No bonus points for stretching it out to 22 episodes. Check it.
That’s from chapter 7. Chapter 8 says that if you include that can be taken out and it doesn’t make a perceptible difference, then it doesn’t belong in the work in the first place.
/Do I win or do I lose for quoting Aristotle?
Always a win. This is a place of higher learning after all.
Win. THAT said, I have two stories, one works in 13 parts, the other works better in 22 (with a broader array of interesting character and a better overall theme and story).
The key is MAKING 22 work better than 13.
And when I say, for example, 13 great episodes of West Wing with 9 Very Good; those 9 Very Good episodes are better than 90% of anything else on TV.
not difficult, since 98% of everything on TV blows goats.
True. But imagine an era when it was less so, and the broadcast networks made an effort to put good things on the telly.
I just deleted my comment, but I had written that you convinced me & that I suppose we’re arguing different things so there really should be two categories since making a good 22 episode show (or 24) is much harder than writing a story for half the time.
Are you kidding me? You ran it out from the back of your own end-zone? why????
Two. Retards. Fucking.
I’m puking in my tea over here – we just switched on the college game. Woof.
It’s the Boise State Mong Band!
See, unlike Rob in WI, I have no filter. And no respect.
Yes, but I made a Caruso joke above so, you know…

WINNAR of the night.
GALLY! Approve my damn comment with the links.
Honest Question: Would Patterson moving from TCU to Texas Tech be a step down?
Just wondering how the jobs would relate to each other. I assume that the order of Texas teams in prestige would be:
Texas, A&M, TCU, TTech, Houston, Baylor, some others… Rice (although Rice does have good academics, doesn’t it?).
Or do I have no idea what I’m writing, because that could very well be the case (what $ is and all that).
TCU and Tech could flip around. TCU has a bit more history (as we’ve seen tonight) but Tech has the presitge of being in a conference that nobody laughs at and says “aww… how cute, they play football too”
-ve, probably a little harder to recruit, +ve better job security since you will only lose a game or two a season if you recruit half decently.
The MWC isn’t a conference to laugh at this season. I’m serious when I say that I think it was better than the Pac 10 last year, and that it’s better than the Pac 10 and maybe the ACC as well as the Big East this year.
Pitt – very unimpressive against NC, Cincy good until they went south (but coaching change must have really hurt)
ACC – marquee win this season was against BYU or West Virginia? Ouch. & Va Tech lost just as badly against Bama as Cincy did to UF
I should have had a question mark after my TCU +s and -s. That was my guess about TCU strengths and weaknesses (not the same amount of money, but easier competition so you look better)
Do I not know how to pronounce Poinsettia?
I say Poin-set-ta… should I be saying Poin-set-tiEEEEa like they do? Do you others say it this way?
There was always a great back and forth between Johnny Carson and Doc Severenson about how to say it. One always said Poin-Setta, the other said Poin-set-tee-a.
I miss those days. Rosen has also given us Poinysettya tonight.
either way you’ve mentioned is considered “correct”. the previously mentioned bastardization is really only fit for derision, however.

I was looking at the SI vault because I remember King saying great things about JaMarcus Russell. Boy, was he ever wrong about Quinn and Russell.
Mike Mayock, on the other hand, said that Russell didn’t have a good work ethic (at least King quoted him).
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1104316/index.htm
It also includes a quotation about Quinn complementing Russell’s pretty eyes.
There’s no way, Quinn actually said that is there? Brady Quinn is so gay… jokes aside.
When the photographer asked them to face one another, inches apart, Quinn said fetchingly to Russell, “You got such pretty eyes.”
haha
Well, football game slows down a little, and this place dies out
