I haven’t watch much hockey in the last 3 years or so, but my thought is that Canada was slow moving the puck. The US was really disciplined and did an excellent job of getting in the lanes on the PK. Canada didn’t do any one-timers, but was stopping the puck and then waiting a second before moving it again, and by that time the US players had already taken away the shot.

Twitter’s great for individual and maybe three way convos, but Last Call was a great way for a group to communicate together instead of looking into a Twitter archive to find out what people were talking about.

On the Mothership “Why the Pirates Could Contend Soon” by Olney. I couldn’t even click, I just let the ideas roll around in my head. They get demoted to Triple A? The rest of the NL Central is disqualified? They and the Nationals get put into a 2 team division, winner goes to playoffs, loser gets a pine box?
Soon, as defined as longer then a little while, faster then never?
Bring back the Federal League- with it’s original players?
Substitute with Folger’s crystals and see if anyone notices?
I like the potential for the Pirates over the next 7 years than maybe any other team in the NL. Their lineup could get scary good in the next few years, and their pitching is young, but not bad (their pitching overall is probably better than Houston and Milwaukee already).
But wouldn’t they just sell off any good players when it was time to pay them? If they could keep folks around, it would be good stuff, but I just don’t see them doing that unless they surprise sex the competition and go to the Series this year.
They only really good player they’ve traded for chump change in the last 10 years has been Aramis Ramirez. Everything else they’ve given up has been 2nd division players at best (and that includes McLouth, who’s a 4th OF at best).
The Pirates problem has been that they haven’t drafted and developed well in the last 15 years, and do silly things like passing up Matt Wieters in the draft or drafting Bryan Bullington #1. Those issues seem to have been corrected with the the new regime.
Fair enough. I still don’t think, barring a Marlins style run, that they’ll be good long enough.
I like how McCutchen looks, but I’m sure they’re trade him and Pedro Alvarez away for used rosin bags and a “Dusty Baker on Coddling Young Pitchers” dvd.
