Remember the speculation that Bill Parcells was going to retire last year and collect the rest of his $12 million contract without having to work the remaining years on his deal with the Dolphins after the team was sold to now owner Stephen Ross due to a clause in Parcells’ deal allowing him to do so if the team was sold? If not click here or here. The rumors of his retirement were discussed so much that it led me to believe Coach Parcells was at least seriously considering retiring again. But as those two stories pointed out (in September and January of 2009 respectively), he eventually said he was going to stay and is still with the team now going into what I predict will be a good season for the Dolphins (whatever that’s worth)
The rumors of Bill Parcells retiring (for good this time, I think) may heat up again after this NFL upcoming season, though. I have been given information from what I consider to be a credible source about the two-time Super Bowl winning coach and current Miami Dolphins Executive Vice President of Football Operations Bill Parcells which leads me to believe he is mulling retirement again. It may not seem like much at face value, but bear with me a minute. Parcells has reportedly been house shopping recently, and it is not just a house. It is a NICE house, a house I have actually seen in person a few times by water when visiting friends. And I can assure you it is ridiculously nice. Just look at it.
This is the house of disgraced and currently imprisoned former CEO of Healthsouth Richard Scrushy located on Lake Martin in Dadeville, Alabama. He had to work very hard (at fraud… allegedly) to afford a house this nice. He was not convicted on all fraud counts, but was convicted of six charges of bribery, conspiracy and mail fraud along with the former governor of Alabama. The house has ten bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a hangar for a sea plane, infinity pool, and other nice things. Here are some other links of interest if you would like to know more gaudy things about the house. Here and here and here.
I have a few people in the area who, knowing what a huge NFL fan I am, let me know that a plane they said was the “Miami Dolphins team plane” had landed at the local airport, KALX in Alexander City, AL (birthplace of Terrell Owens oddly enough.) This is a small town so it is really hard to keep a secret to begin with, but an event such as an NFL team plane landing in town registers about an 8 on the gossip buzz scale. To give you a gauge of where that ranks on the scale, hearing a person having an affair ranks at about a 4, and someone getting to smell one of Nick Saban’s dumps in a public restroom ranks at about a 25. After hearing a Dolphins team plane was there in town I could not help but wonder what in the hell for so I proceeded to pump everyone I know there for any information. I was told by a few sources, including one real estate agent, Parcells was in town to see the Scrushy house. Despite my best efforts I have been unable to confirm the tail numbers for any plane that is actually used by the Dolphins so that I can track the flight history to corroborate this story. With that being said this is all a rumor at best, but hey, it works for The Big Lead, right? The closest I came is a Stephen Ross (Dolphins owner) owned plane that had no recorded flights on the day in question. I even checked all of the old owner Wayne Huizenga’s planes that I could find. He wised-up and made it where you can’t track his planes on the websites that allow you to do such things.
The reason I think this signals retirement plans for Parcells is simply the cost of the home. The two-time Super Bowl winner is a fairly wealthy man, but not extremely wealthy. This house is on the market for around $5 million right now, and estimating the coach’s net worth given the time in which he was one of the best coaches in the NFL I’m not sure he could afford a place like this unless he was putting all his eggs in this basket. My guess would be his stint in Dallas and currently with the Dolphins have been his two most lucrative deals. Some of you may wonder, why wouldn’t he retire to New Jersey, where he’s from? Well, because only homeless people retire to trash dumps.
So I give you speculation and hearsay. Take it for what it is worth, not very much. Or is it?
Also, I remembered this incredible profile of Bill Parcells by Michael Lewis that was either a part of his book The Blindside or was done around the same time as that book for the New York Times. Enjoy.
