To be completely honest, I have no place reviewing the new Harry Potter movie. My writing approaches readable at best, and I’m not nearly nuanced enough with the English language to properly critique a doughnut let alone a Hollywood production. Although, Hollywood has proven itself incompetent which makes this a match made in heaven.
I decided sometime this afternoon that instead of working on my serialized article on Internet community I would go see the Midnight Showing of the Harry Potter movie. Seeing as how I have a huge Wednesday in front of me I crashed to recharge the batteries before the show. This led me to be in a slight stupor during my jaunt to the cineplex closest to my house. Now I live in a pretty decent part of the city, but you kind of have to cross through the ghetto to get downtown from my place. This always leads to interesting situations, and tonight was no different. I see a hefty, down on her luck type lady coming towards me and I decide not to make eye contact as I don’t really want to be late. It is after all a midnight showing of a cultish movie, and I don’t need to be fighting anymore 14 year olds. Never the less, this lady asks me if I have a dollar so that she can get home. I explain, honestly, that I do not and she regards this and turns away in acceptance. Then she turns back and says would I take her home instead? I lie, and tell her that I’m on my way to my girlfriends house (don’t worry ladies, that was a ruse). She begrudgingly accepts this and mosey’s on her way. I guess a stunningly handsome man with a unemployment/pedophile beard has options, sweet!
I arrive at the newly renovated theater about 5 minutes before showtime and don’t see the line yet. I make my way to the ticket counter and take out my money. The youngster behind the counter says, “Which movie would you like to see sir?”. Say what kiddo? It’s Midnight Premier of a single movie, what fucking movie do you think I’m here to see? (more…)

Hi everybody. I originally had an idea for a post on my take on the Deadspin situation. It soon evolved into something much more. I broke it up and serialized it, because I’m not Simmons and I can’t just plug in 80′s references to keep the masses entertained over a long piece. Stay tuned all week for updates to the story.
An Outsider’s look at Commenting, Community and the Deadspin Situation: Part 1
Hello Deadspinites, Blogrifca, and fellow Commentariat,
Some of you know me, or have gotten to know me pretty recently. If we don’t know each other, perhaps we soon shall. I call the Wintry city of Edmonton, Canada home, and am a quasi-intellectual sports fanatic. I’m also an outsider from the comenting/website/blogger community, just now finding my way in.
Several years ago the Internet was a vast oasis of porn and mostly obscure reference/research information. Sure NHL.com and ESPN.com existed, but they were to the current internet what Chris Wallace and his like are to competent sports management. They were slow, inefficient and got no respect (not that they deserved any). If you wanted to have a discussion with someone you’d call them up from a landline telephone or perhaps even write them a letter.
So obviously the Internet community was archaic and limited to a few factions. The Pedobears, being the forward thinking insightful group that they are, were there with bells on. It seems that Mystery Vans with the promises of free candy weren’t quite working like they once did. The response was to move on to nearly instant (fucking dialup) distant relationships with the possibility of something more. A subset of this group was the stupid teenagers in chatrooms with the incessant A/S/L, what are you wearing type questions (I call this a subset, because many of the so called teenagers were in fact sneaky Pedobears trying to score underage ass). As I mentioned before, I was going to have guest writers come in from time to time. This guy I gave free reign to as he’s super creative, funny and I suppose you could say a minor celebrity (voice actors can be celebrities right?). I’ll leave it up to him to name himself, but enjoy our first Random Deviation.
It was a warm day, Canada day.
I remember walking away from this large downtown Vancouver building, the art gallery. The first bite was awful, the second worse; we choked them down and laid down the rules. “If we get nervous”, a voice said, “just remind us we’re safe”.
Safe.
After a small jog in a fresh Yaris I stood in the entrance to my friends apartment, it was then I felt the fingers creeping inside my skull. (more…)
