That’s one hell of a hit…
Ahhh…Pop Warner football: Building the foundations of sportsmanship and camaraderie. And after a hit like that, possible brain damage.
The above video reminds me of my early playing days. Let us take a stroll down memory lane…
It was the 4th quarter, and my team was winning. The clock was winding down and we were just trying to run out the remaining 40 seconds. I took the ball on a hand-off from our own 45 yard line. I ran and ran, breaking two tackles. I wasn’t just getting the first down, I possibly going to score.
Unfortunately the other team’s safety, who may or may not been a 24 year-old Dominican man (it’s hard to say because birth certificates from foreign countries are always so sketchy), laid me out. Helmet to helmet full contact. The kind where you lose continence. Um not that I did or anything…
Before I even hit the ground the ball was out. Said safety picked up the ball and ran it back for a touchdown, all while lighting up a cigarette and blowing kisses to his wife and 3 kids in the stands. I’m not totally sure about that last part, I was highly concussed and my lungs felt like they were filling up with blood.
My father ran onto the field yelling and screaming. I can remember his arms flailing around and beer spilling on me as he stood over me. I don’t remember much else, but I do remember him saying, “Way to cost me $3,500, fuck face.”
Ahhh…Pop Warner football. Those were the days.
